Condominium is an invented Latin word formed by adding the prefix con- (‘together’) to the word dominium (‘dominion', 'ownership’). Its meaning is, therefore, ‘joint dominion’ or ‘co-ownership'. In international law, condominium is a political territory over which multiple sovereign powers formally agree to share equal dominium (or sovereignty) and exercise their rights jointly, without dividing it into "national" zones.

CONDOMINIUM is the title of a series of reenactments of performances, events, and documentary materials belonging to the history of Rogério Nuno Costa’s Vou A Tua Casa, a performance art trilogy for domestic spaces that premiered in 2003. Each event of the series elaborates on the notion of meeting as performance, aiming at building a contextual relationship with its venues (stages, galleries, residency studios, etc.), and in collaboration with different guests for each iteration. As part of a broader retrospective project, CONDOMINIUM seeks to further elaborate and intensify the conceptual relationships between a performance-as-encounter (which Vou A Tua Casa had profusely addressed) and the various agents — artistic directors, producers, technicians, educators, spectators... — who (co-)inhabit and/or visit a given venue. Mixing a round table, a shared meal, a lecture and a celebration, CONDOMINIUM proposes the collective and collaborative writing of an epistolary narrative centered on the contingency of an artist’s erratic trajectory, drawing on a 20-year collection of private encounters and intimate one-to-one experiences. Whereas that exercise was intrinsically private in Vou A Tua Casa, it is now transposed into the public sphere: the stage as a site where ideas surrounding convention, history, and hegemony can be built, confronted and disrupted. Ultimately, the project ambitions the consolidation of a community that has, in more or less wandering and serendipitous ways, converged around Rogério Nuno Costa's itinerant body of work and the geo-emotional path suggested by his seminal work Vou A Tua Casa:
“I went to your house, you came to mine, and we met along the way; now the time has come for us to meet again on neutral territory and, in doing so, to question why we are here and what remains for us to say to one another. Do we still remember?”
This cycle (and the retrospective project that anchors it) aspires to offer one or more responses to an inevitable question: can Vou A Tua Casa (and, ultimately, its creator) reconcile with the formal space of the stage that it refused two decades ago?
